The 4 Main Types of AC: From Residential to Industrial

Air conditioning isn’t just about “home cooling.” In a commercial or industrial setting, the demands on a system—from air volume to run-time—are much higher. At JC Refrigeration, we categorise systems based on their capacity to handle different environments. Let’s take a look at the 4 main types of AC:

1. Mid-Wall Split Units (Residential & Small Office)

The most common solution for localised climate control.

  • Residential: Perfect for bedrooms and lounges.
  • Commercial: Ideal for server rooms or private offices where independent temperature control is vital.
  • Benefit: High energy efficiency with minimal structural changes.

2. Ceiling Cassettes (Commercial & Retail)

These are the workhorses of the commercial sector, designed to sit flush within a suspended ceiling.

  • Commercial: The standard for retail shops, open-plan offices, and medical suites.
  • Industrial: Often used in clean-room environments or high-traffic lobbies.
  • Benefit: 4-way airflow provides uniform cooling across large spaces without “hot spots.”

3. Hide-Away / Ducted Units (High-End & Corporate)

A discreet, high-capacity solution where the unit is entirely hidden in a ceiling void or bulkhead.

  • Commercial: Used in hotels, luxury boardrooms, and modern corporate headquarters.
  • Industrial: Can be scaled for larger zones where “invisible” air distribution is required for aesthetic or space reasons.
  • Benefit: The quietest operation and zero impact on interior design.

4. Window Wall & Console Units (Industrial & Site Support)

Self-contained units that are rugged and reliable.

  • Industrial/Commercial: Perfect for site offices, workshops, or “Heritage” buildings where external compressors cannot be mounted.
  • Benefit: These units are “tough.” They don’t require complex copper piping, making them ideal for high-vibration or temporary environments.

The JC Refrigeration Cape Advantage

Whether you are cooling a single bedroom or managing the climate for an entire office block, the principles remain the same: Correct sizing and consistent maintenance. If your system is incorrectly spec’d for a commercial load, it will burn out. We provide technical site assessments for all sectors to ensure your hardware matches your demand.
